ATTENDANCE
An absence from school will be excused for (1) illness, (2) death in family, (3) dental and medical appointments, when an appointment at other times is not possible, (4) court appearance, (5) an absence that requires an extended amount of time. These requests must be in writing from a parent and/or guardian. Students absent from school for any other reason than the above excuses will not be accepted unless it is cleared in advance. Upon return from any absence parents are required to submit a written reason for absence. The law excuses no absence and academic work must be completed as required by the teacher for a grade. Failure to complete missed work results in poor academic standing.
The teacher refers excessive absences of more than three (3) times from classes to the Dean of Students. A letter will then be mailed to the parents advising them of the policy on absenteeism and that continued absence may result in denial of academic credit, failure, and possible retention at current grade level. Six (6) unexcused absences, in a semester as shown by the school records, and shown not to be due to extenuating circumstances, will result in loss of academic credit for the marking period. This may affect grade point average, academic probation, and retention at grade level.
Parents who are excessively tardy or late dropping off their child(ren) will cause the students to miss valuable class time. In addition, students must make-up all missed class work. Failure to complete all required work will result in failure of class or grade.
Parents must pick students up immediately after dismissal time.
Tardies are counted toward absences. Students are tardy after reporting to school past 8 a.m. (elementary), and 7:45 a.m. (middle/high).
Twelve (12) days absent (6 per semester) may result in retention in grade.
Parent/guardians must attend a conference with the School Leader after receipt of an excessive tardy or absence notice. The School Leader is required by law, per the Erase Truancy Program, to report any student who has accumulated 10 absences or more during the course of the school year to the County Prosecutor’s Office.
